p>The original 1993 Doom game, which was the genesis of more than three decades of shooters is still alive and kicking. The game has been ported to more or less every platform that is possible, but it's more than just a meme. Community mods like Brutal Doom, that have access to the source code of the original game, have helped keep the original game relevant well after it was surpassed by modern games. The latest twist to the beloved shooter is newfangled lighting effects that ray-trace.

p>This isn't the only time we've seen a combination of high-tech lighting with low-tech visuals. The famously blocky Minecraft has official Nvidia-branded RTX support, and Nvidia rebuilt Quake II to show the full-blown path tracing capabilities that it could look like. https://blogfreely.net/lindaboard72/this-minecraft-fan-created-a-working-game-gif However, the Doom mod is free for every PC player. It's especially dramatic in the Doom sci-fi setting that is a Martian colony that is infested with ravenous demons. Realistically rendered shadows and reflections of plasma ammunition, fireballs and pools of lava demonstrate just how good lighting can accomplish even for Doom's basic polygon-based environments and sprite enemies.

p>You can see those effects in action in the video posted by PCWorld's YouTube? channel below, and an explanation of how to activate the mod and play Doom with the gorgeous lighting yourself.

p>The PrBoom? mod is created by the programmer Sultim Tsyrendashiev. He's also baked in support for Nvidia DLSS and other well-known tweaks, including an ever-available in-game flashlight. You'll still need a fairly robust PC to run the mod to its fullest however DLSS can ease the strain. You can still play the original three episodes of Doom. However you may need to go into the settings file to get optimal performance. You can download the mod's files and the source code on Github.
