p>Alice from the fantastic game blog Wonderland is a fan of WoW and blogs regularly about it-- I especially like the "The other me is Epic I'm just an alt" shirt she posted in her most recent post. She claims that "the problem with WoW is that with the servers. https://notes.io/qd94g It seems like we're all in the same boat" She has friends on nearly all servers, including US, EU and Oceanic however she isn't able to access them without paying a cost each time. She claims that Blizzard has changed the software that clients use for UK and US clients to ensure that you cannot access a server using an alternative client. You need to purchase two separate clients to access the EU and US servers. It's not a problem for players like me who play in one country. But it is for Alice who recently relocated to California from England.

p>However, that doesn't mean that I don't have problems with Blizzards' (and MMORPGs in general, as most of them are "sharded" in some way) servers-- my friend's characters were created on a different servers than I was on, as a result, since I joined his server I've now had sixties scattered across several servers, and I'm now required to pay $25 to transfer each character, in the event that Blizzard allows transfers to my already-crowded server. Then there's the issue of queues generally that everyone, it seems, is dealing with in greater numbers.

p>What's the solution? It's possible that there's no one. Free transfers from server servers would keep players satisfied however, they could also stress out the game's economies, clump populations up (more queues), and cost Blizzard more time and staff hours (which means less time spent on development and keeping servers up). It might be nice to be able, as Alice suggests to have everyone on one large server but I doubt Blizzard has the infrastructure to do this at this point-- even if it were feasible to place all seven million players in a world that could interact with each other and interact with each other, it would require more of a change in the code than the idea of letting flying mounts roam free, and that's not happening. For the world of Azeroth as is currently portrayed is unlikely that Alice's issue will ever really get solved.

p>This allows other competitors to join I would guess. EVE, Guild Wars and even MySpace? are all listed as alternatives to the problem of "sharding". I'd love to hear from any MMORPG that has a great solution to these issues and is in line with the gameplay and style of WoW.
