p>The original 1993 Doom game, which was the basis of more than three decades of shooters, remains alive and well. The game has been translated to almost every platform that is possible, but it's more than just a meme. Community mods like Brutal Doom, which have access to the source code for the classic game, have kept the original game in high-quality after it was outclassed by more modern games. The latest update to the beloved shooter is adding modern ray tracing lighting effects.

p>It's not the first time we've seen a combination of high-tech lighting and low-tech visuals. The well-knownly bloated Minecraft comes with official Nvidia-branded RTX support and Nvidia rebuilt Quake II to show off what full-blown path tracing can look like. Every PC player is able to download the Doom mod for no cost. It's particularly dramatic in Doom's sci-fi setting, a Martian colony that is infested with ravenous monsters. Shadows and reflections caused by plasma ammunition, fireballs and lava pools demonstrate how good lighting can be, even in Doom's polygon-based environments.

p>You can see the effects in action in the video posted by PCWorld's YouTube? channel, along with an explainer of how to enable the mod and play Doom with the drool-worthy lighting effects yourself.

p>Sultim Tsyrendashiev is the programmer behind PrBoom?. https://sbn.bz/ He's also included support for Nvidia DLSS and other popular tweaks, such as an in-game flashlight. You'll still require a beefy PC to run the mod to its fullest however DLSS can ease the strain. You can still play the first three episodes of Doom. However, you might need to go into the settings file to ensure optimal performance. Mod files and source code are available for download on Github now.
