In the Marine Corps, I didn’t really fit in either. I was way smarter than most of my peers; I had more in common with the junior officers that were just out of college than I did with other enlisted men.

In college, I just kind of went to class. I transferred to UW as a Junior and never really thought about joining a frat – big mistake! Short of joining a frat, the next best thing would have been to get involved in clubs or something. Didn’t do it. My last year in school, my parents split up. After graduating, I had to move back in with my Mom to try and keep her from a complete nervous breakdown and also to try and keep her in her house (she got the house but didn’t have the income to support it). So, I basically put my life on hold. A few years ago I woke up a little bit and started to make some changes. The first thing I did was I took the Carnegie Course. I’m what you call a late bloomer.

I can tell you right now that the majority of guys in the community were not especially popular in High School or College. Most of us are guys that slipped through the cracks in one way or another. Some are complete misfits, but most are more or less normal guys like myself that just never really understood how to be social or were just too caught up in their own head space. Locally, here in Seattle, I would guess that at least 60% of the guys did not go to college.

AFC Adam did a lair talk here a few months ago and one of the things he said was that most guys drop out of the community once they get a girlfriend.
