Since both my ‘rents are now gone to their reward as I reflect on parental influence I have to give my folks a Passing grade. They were a mixture of authoritarian and kind-hearted. They were who they were and didn’t try to change for popularity or to please anyone else. My reflection now turns to me, as a parent. What did I do right or wrong? What will my boys say about me and issues they might have? I’d guess pretty much they would be positive and mirror my style–offer advice if I think its warranted and realize it might not be received gratefully and put to use. But they know they are loved and supported and that they have received the gift of acceptance with a small slice of “to whom much is given, much is expected”. I’m overall grateful to my parents, hope my kids are grateful for me (and their mother, of course!!!). Repeat, as necessary.
