Minecraft creator on Microsoft deal: "It's about my mental health'

After Microsoft announced it would buy Minecraft developer Mojang for $2.5bn, (PS1.5bn), Markus Persson, the Swedish developer behind Markus Persson - also known as Notch -- released his own personal statement regarding the purchase. Below is the complete statement. https://anotepad.com/notes/c7r4mdq5

I'm leaving Mojang

I don't consider myself a game developer. I create games for enjoyable and because I am a gamer and I love to program however, I don't design games with the goal of them becoming massive hits I don't set out to make a difference in the world.

Minecraft was a huge success. People tell me that it has changed their lives. It didn't happen on accidental. It's a nice compliment, and it's fascinating to slowly be in the public spotlight.

It was quite a while ago that I decided to quit Minecraft development. Jens was the perfect person to lead it, and I wanted to experiment with things that were completely new. At first, I was unsuccessful by trying to make something big again but since I've chose to stick with small prototypes and interesting challenges, I've had lots of fun at work.

Although I wasn't certain how I would be able to fit in to Mojang where the actual work was conducted People told me that I was important for the culture and I decided to stay.

I was home with a cold a couple of weeks ago when the internet went wild with hate against me over some sort of EULA situation that I had nothing to do with. have anything to do with. I was confused. I didn't understand. I tweeted this to express my frustration.

Later on, I watched the This is Phil Fish video on YouTube and started to realize I did not have the connection to my fans I believed I had. I've become a symbol. I do not want to be a symbol with a responsibility for something massive that I don't know, that I do not want to tackle that is always resurfacing to me. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not an executive director. I'm a geeky computer programmer who loves posting my opinions on Twitter.

When the deal is completed and I'm done, I'll be leaving Mojang to go back to web-based experiments and Ludum Dares. If I make an error and it gets traction, I'll probably drop the project immediately.

Given my public image, which is already a bit skewed by me, I don't expect to be in a position to ignore negative feedback, but at least I won't feel the need to look them up.

I'm aware this goes against a lot of what I've stated in public. I don't have a solid answer to that. I also realize that a lot of you have used me as a symbol of some perceived struggle. I'm not. I'm a human being, and I'm right there struggling with you.

I am in love with you. All of you. Thank you for creating Minecraft what it is today. There are just too many of us, and I cannot be responsible for something as large as Minecraft. In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft now. It's been a part your lives for a long time, and will remain yours.

It's not about the money. It's about my mental wellbeing.
