In the spring of 1819, a young fellow by the title of Henry Shaw from Sheffield, England landed in the small French village if St. Louis, Missouri. There he established up a company promoting hardware to the settlers that were heading out from the "Gateway to the West." Business was good and he was able to retire by the age of forty.
