On Mothers Day, this one is for you, mamas! Thank you for picking up your kids when they fall and holding them tight. Thank you for giving and doing it all when you’re out of steam.

On that note… I’m thrilled to introduce you to the Write On Mamas! Founded out of a desire to connect, the Write on Mamas is a group of more than 40 moms — and one dad! — who meet online and in person to write, revise, and share. They’ve recently published a fabulous collection of essays about how parenting shaped them as writers. It’s a book full of promise.

Ms. Magazine said in a recent review of Mamas Write:

“You won’t find cliché advice on how to become a writer or cute essays on potty training… What you will find are real stories about the messy business of being both a writer and a parent.”

I’m honored to know many of these writers (above) personally in the San Francisco Bay Area, including:

Single dad Steven Friedman, who wrote a beautiful post on this very blog about losing his wife;

Janine Kovac, who writes about giving birth to her premature twin sons;

Claire Hennessy, who hilariously describes her blended family;

Mary Paul Hill, who writes about her middle son who was diagnosed at birth with Prader-Willi syndrome;

Joanne Hartman, a founding member of Literary Mama who has a poignant essay about her daughter and reading.

I particularly loved this essay by single mom Pamela Alma Weymouth, “Become the Hero:”

“This is how, on the day you discover your first wrinkle, you find yourself divorced, in need of a date, slumped inside your dented red Honda in front of your falling-apart fixer-upper in a suburban outpost of the city of San Francisco.”
